Teaching Respect

Education is not only about teaching students how to add and subtract or follow the scientific method. It is also more than improving reading comprehension and understanding how the past impacts the future. Educators have to teach students how to be positive community members. This involves working with people they may not agree with and understanding how to compromise. Therefore, teaching respect is absolutely essential in schools today. Thankfully, the lessons on Respect in 15 Mindful Minutes will be an incredible way to teach students about character education.

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and Character Education

When students are in schools, they are often surrounded by caring, nurturing teachers and awesome classmates. Therefore, they gain a sense of comfort. Thus, this is the perfect place to teach students about being the best version of themselves. Since they are only in school part of the day, this involves being a role model inside and outside of the classroom.

However, it is important for students to know that everyone makes mistakes. Thus, part of character education is allowing students to make mistakes in order to learn how to make right. It is about teaching students important values, such as perseverance, courage, honesty, and kindness. Furthermore, it is also teaching tolerance and how to be open to different ideas. Most importantly, students need to learn how to apply these skills while handling different emotions and decisions. Ultimately, SEL and character education lesson elements will teach students how to be positive community members.

Respect: The Most Meaningful 15 Minutes of Your Day

Teaching respect is one of the most meaningful lessons for students. Everyone wants to be respected, but students have to learn how to show respect as well. Additionally, this includes showing respect even when viewpoints differ.

15 Minutes

It is understandable that teachers may be wondering how to fit one more item onto the agenda. However, SEL and character education does not take long! Mindful Minutes is focused on sharing meaningful social-emotional and character lessons in a short amount of time. Truly, students will have a powerful 15-minute lesson!

Consistent Format

There is already so much to plan each day. Thus, Mindful Minutes includes daily lessons that are 15 minutes or less. Even better, it includes a daily format. For instance, Monday is Read It with a read-aloud while Tuesday is Observe It with discussion and role play. Then, Wednesday is Explore It with an activity or game while Thursday is Explain It. Here, students can bring all of their thoughts together with a written response. Lastly, Friday is Celebrate It where students recognize themselves and others.

Variety of Topics

While the unit starts with respect, Mindful Minutes includes so much more. For example, there are units on emotions, teamwork, and friendship. Each unit is packed with short yet powerful lessons. Everything is low prep and includes read-aloud suggestions, videos, and images for discussions. Additionally, there are even step-by-step lesson plans!
