Class Journals
Tuesdays are my 2nd graders favorite day for writing stations because they get to write in their class journals! These shared journals have become such a highlight during our station time that I decided to share how I use them each and every week and how they become a fun keepsake for the end of the year.
Each month I take 7-10 spiral notebooks and laminate and glue a journal cover onto the front. I also make sure I place the author page inside the front cover so that we know who has written in each journal. Then each week (on Tuesdays) my students write in their journals as part of our writing station time. They get to choose one journal that day that they haven’t wrote in. They read the prompt carefully. Take time to read the previous journal entries from their peers. Think about and plan what they are going to write. Add their name to the author list. Find the next blank page and begin with the date. Then finally they write their journal and illustrate a picture to go along with their fun writing.
The best part of implementing shared class journals is that at the end of the year, you will have atleast one complete class journal for each student to take home as a keepsake from the year. This keepsake is special because it has the writing of their classmates and shows each student’s personality in their individual writing!
Class journals are available for each month. Each pack includes 10 colored and 10 black and white journal covers and directions on using this in your classroom. There is a growing bundle also available now that will include the journals for the entire year.
